What’s Faster Than An Aprilia RSV? Watch to find out!
A streetfighter is a superbike that is customized by removing the fairing, and making other changes that result in an overall more aggressive look. Made popular by European riders, this type of custom motorcycle is gaining popularity all over the world.
This particular term should not be confused with a street motorcycle or street-use motorcycle, which is a generic term (used by the motorcycle industry) applied to urban street bikes.
Moto Guzzi, also known as Guzzi, is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer that has endured from the industry’s infancy to its place today as the oldest European manufacturer in continuous motorcycle production. Guzzi is now one of seven brands owned by Piaggio & Co. SpA, Europe’s largest motorcycle manufacturer and the world’s fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer by unit sales.
Established in 1921 in Mandello del Lario, Italy, Moto Guzzi has led Italy’s motorcycling manufacture, enjoyed prominence in worldwide motorcycle racing, and led the industry in ground-breaking innovation – for the greater part of its history.
Today Moto Guzzi impresses its heritage on a range of motorcycles in touring, cruising, racing and naked configurations – each with the company’s iconic, air-cooled 90° V-twin engines.
The Aprilia RSV4’s 65° V4 motor produces a claimed 180bhp@12,500rpm and 85ftlb@10,000rpm. It has a single block crankcase with integrated cylinder liners, titanium inlet valves and balance shaft. The six-speed cassette gearbox is removable, handy for racing and a slipper clutch comes as standard. Being a V4, the engine is incredibly small and has allowed Aprilia to make a tiny bike around it, but the power delivery is the best part. It’s so smooth and wide the motor doesn’t actually feel that powerful and you don’t realise how fast you’re going, until you look down at the speedo! The engine note is similar to the deep, metallic boom of the RSV twin and the spread of power is actually very reminiscent of the new ‘long bang’ Yamaha R1.
Ride and Handling
We can’t give the RSV4 a perfect score for handling as we only rode it in rain conditions, albeit on racing wets. What is impressive is that the Ohlins forks and shock have the adjustment in them to make the Aprilia soft and plush to suit the conditions, giving masses of feel and confidence to the rider. Monobloc Brembo brakes are powerful, but unlike a Ducati easy to use and not too brutal. Being so compact, the RSV4 is a bit of a squeeze for riders over six-foot.
On Saturday, April 25, during the test ride when the circuit was only beginning to dry after the rain, Vladimir Leonov showed the 18th best result (2:10.277) - ending less than 2.5 seconds behind the winner. A total of 23 main pilots plus two local Japanese riders participated in both test rides on Friday and Saturday.
Born on April 26, 1987 in Donetsk, the Rostov region (Russia), Vladimir Leonov currently lives in Moscow. He loves motocross, mountain skiing, snowboarding, jogging, music, and bicycles. He has been involved in moto sport activities since the impressive age of 12. At the age of 14, Vladimir participated in the Championship of Russia with his 80cc bike. In 2004, he received the amateur motocross Russian Cup in the under 125cc class. A mere year later, in 2005, he received the Cup in the under 250cc class. Since late 2006, Vladimir has been a member of the Vector Racing Team and participated in the Superstock 600 class. Several MotoGP teams noticed Vladimir’s impressive results. Ultimately, this all made it possible for Vector Racing Team to strike a deal with Viessmann Kiefer Racing, allowing Vladimir Leonov to be part of it in MotoGP 2009, class 250cc.
Aprilia is an Italian motorcycle company, one of the seven marques owned by Piaggio, the world’s fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer.
Aprilia started as a scooter manufacturer, but has more recently come to be known for its race-winning sportbikes. It is most recently best known for its flagship 1000 cc V-twin Superbike, the RSV Mille.
Racing
Despite being a relatively small company by global motorcycling standards, Aprilia is very active in Motorcycle sport. It contests many Road Racing formulae, including the FIM 125 cc World Championship, the FIM 250 cc World Championship, and the now-defunct FIM 500 cc World Championship. From 2002–2004 they participated in the FIM MotoGP World Championship, and from 1999–2003 they participated in the FIM Superbike World Championship. Aprilia has now returned to World Superbike for the 2009 season with Max Biaggi and Shinya Nakano as their factory riders both piloting the RSV4.
